Mission Statement

The Arkansas Virtual Academy uses the individualized curriculum from K12, which is based on decades of education research about how minds really work. With courses in six core subjects, the curriculum was designed to let K-8 kids find the learning style that works best for them.

Enrollment Tests Or RequirementsAccording to Arkansas regulations, students must reside in Arkansas and meet the age requirements in order to be eligible to enroll in ARVA. For the 2011-2012 school year, in addition to K?? lesson, unit, and semester assessments, ARVA students in grades 3 through 8 will take the Arkansas Benchmark Exam. Students in kindergarten through eighth grades will take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). These tests are a required part of participation in ARVA.

Social OpportunitiesThroughout the year, students are invited to participate in school outings, field trips (to historical sites, museums, zoos, etc.), picnics, and other social events. We expect local clusters of students and parents to get together on a regular basis in their areas. We also are exploring new ways to interact socially using the powerful reach of the Internet. With online discussions and forums, new types of communities can be formed that are based not on geography and place but on shared interests.

Necessary Education MaterialsFamilies are required to have their own computer at home. However, qualifying families may be loaned a computer system (including computer, printer, software, and set rate for Internet reimbursement) to support the learning process. This will be discussed during the enrollment process. We provide all the textbooks and instructional materials that are needed to complete the program in grades K-8. These books and materials are sent to students directly.

The debate on the importance and value of standardized test scores has raged across the country for the better part of the decade. On one hand, a standardized test is one of the easiest and simplest ways to compare and contrast the success of students in certain schools and school districts. On the other hand, some students’ academic abilities do not shine through on tests. Here at OnlineSchools.com, we see the validity in both arguments, which is why we chose to present test data for each school without any editorial comment. Understand that test scores can be a useful indicator of a successful school, but they are not the only indicator. Also please note that each state offers slightly different types and versions of these standardized tests, so comparing test results from one state to results from another isn’t informative, or fair.
